Hi Paul, I just caught up with this. Excellent podcast.

Could you ask one of your legal eagles to explain something please. What is promissory estoppel, with specific relation to the Dangerous Dogs Act?

Wow Gab, that taxes the grey cells.

From what I can recall, promissory estoppel is an equitable remedy (not to be confused with proprietary estoppel in land).

The grey matter tells me (without raching for Nutshells or Chitty) that this was a Denning creation from the second world war - the High Trees case. I seem to recall the facts in that matter were a landlord agreeing to some reduction of rent in war time and then reneging on the promise. The fact that there was a promise, a reliance and a detriment meant that the promise stood.

I'm not sure how that would relate to the Dangerous Dogs Act. I can certainly pull up a copy of the Act, from memory, it's mercifully short. In what context had you seen or heard promissory estoppel related to the Act?
