Big Brother / Animal Farm?

I am watching Big Brother - and I have no idea why. I hate the programme, I love to hate it. I hate to love it.

Tonight, I've watched the incredible juxtaposition of Jodie Marsh and her mate being turned on by a vicious had-been comic and an odd politician with the most peculiar agenda side with a foul mouthed fish-faced transvestite.

A Blonde Essex Bimbo appears to have assumed the most grown up role in the one true single, unifying, conciliatory gesture. Galloway appears to me to be the most shrewd, conniving character, adopting a reptilian charm. I remember Jungle Book .... "....trust in me...."

I couldn't help but draw comparisons with Animal Farm, the group turning in unison, the assumed leaders.

See what I mean about hating to love?

Is it just me?!

You seemed to sum up the whole sorry state of affairs pretty well there, Paul. Me? I don't watch it and never will; it only encourages the progamme makers to make more of this sort of dross. Podcast T.V. that's what we need. Now there's a thought...

I'm afraid it IS just you Paul. Well it's not me anyway.

We've had 4 or 5 series of Big Brother in Australia and are apparently due for another series in a month or so and I honestly cannot watch a single second any longer.

During the first season I was mildly curious in a vaugely "stopping to look at a train wreck" kind of way but by now I simply cannot watch. If this is "reality" I seriously worry for the future of modern society.

For the entire 3 month season I have to use my TV purely as a plant stand in order to avoid Big Brother. Not only are there the many hours of insipid drivel of the actual show but there are the evicted housemates popping up on talk shows or other spin-off, cross promotional garbage and I quite literally find myself going insane.

Although I do have to be grateful to Big Brother...if it weren't for me needing some alterntative entertainment to TV and commercial radio I might never have found podasting or YOU Paul.

I hate, it I hate, it I hate it!! I can't believe people are so bored with there own lives that they'll watch this trash. It's as much the viewer as the prog maker that should be shot live at peak viewing time. Hell, why not do away with the "contestants" too. Extreme? I think not.

That has to be the finest description of Pete Burns that I have ever had the pleasure to read. Makes me chuckle every time I think of it/him/her...

Paul, I read the post last night but didn't have time to comment. So, hear goes...

The snobby, middle class intellectual in me seriously hates this show. I hate the way that people are humiliated and made to perform like monkeys. It pandas to the most basic, animalistic, voyeuristic traits...

And yet, and yet, and yet... I end up watching it most nights. I think it basically boils down to this. All humans fantastically nosey. And whether or not you like the “contestants” you want to see what happens next. If I saw Pete Burns walking down the street, I would laugh my head off. But, and it is a big but. I am absolutely fascinated as what makes him tick. I think it’s as simple as that.

Love it, or hate it, Big Brother (and Wife Swap for that matter) are brilliantly executed examinations of how people interact with one another.

Aaah ... that's the problem them. I am actually not fantastically nosey...I am the opposite...I really don't want to know.

I am, for some unfathomable reason, the person that strangers tell all their problems to. I can be sitting alone on the bus with my headphones on and someone will get on the bus, sit next to me and start telling me their problems (such as starting a discussion of whether or not they should have a sex change operation). This happens to me all the time and I'm over it all.

So perhaps that's why I don't like big brother etc etc - I get too much of humanity in my day-to-day life and I watch TV for escapism :)
